U.S. House Committee on Un-American Activities holds hearings in Boston.

March 18, 1958

The committee hears testimony concerning Communist activity in New England in the first of four days of hearings in the Federal Building in Post Office Square. After the last hearing, on March 21, 1958, chairman U.S. Rep. Clyde Doyle (D-Calif.) calls Boston the birthplace of American freedom, then declares, “It is bad enough to find evidence of the Communist conspiracy in other parts of the country, but it is worse to find it here.” He recommends establishment of permanent state and municipal agencies to unearth subversive activity.
